Whenever I’m driving and come across animals that are crossing the street, it’s so important for me to stand at a safe distance and let them cross the road without any harm or threat. I’ve seen cats, squirrels, raccoons, and even ducks crossing the road—you better believe that I see that they’re safe and sound before moving on. But unlike the cop in the video below, I have yet to see a family of bears making their way from one end to the other.
A police officer with the Town of Carroll Police Department, New Hampshire, stopped a safe distance from a momma bear that was crossing the road. To his surprise, the momma bear was pacing the road with her cubs and for a little bit, he wasn’t sure why. Then it donned on him that one of her cubs wasn’t well.
She wanted all 4 of her cubs to follow her from one side of the road to the other, but the cub, in the end, was too sick to make it fully across and would stop half way through its journey. Eventually, momma bear thought it would be best for her to leave the cub behind and cross the road with the rest of her children. It was probably heartbreaking to watch for the cop.
The officer waited until the bears had crossed and then decided to take the weak cub with him to a rehabilitation center. But this little runt wasn’t the only sibling left behind. It turned out that the momma bear had 5 cubs of which 2 were too weak to continue on their journey with their family. Both the siblings were reunited at the rehab center. I would say this is a bitter sweet ending to their story. What do you think?
