Locals struggle to dispose of a rotting whale carcass as it bakes in the hot African sun. The enormous mammal, which weighs 10 tonnes, was washed up on the beach of Amanzimtoti, a small coastal town south of the city of Durban, South Africa in early August. Waste management services arrived at the blood-stained beach to discover dozens of locals hacking into the humpback whale’s putrid body with machetes. The whale was left to rot on the beach, instead of towing it into the water or burying it in the sand.
